This 3-hour  workshop is an upper-level course dedicated to teaching mental health clinicians Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Designed for those with an intermediate to advanced training in ACT, this workshop delves into the benefits and applications of ACT in treating substance abuse and addiction. In doing so, this workshop addresses the fundamentals of this topic, followed by teaching participants an ACT approach to substance abuse and addiction by way of core processes and skills for conceptualizing, intervening, and supporting. Consideration is also given for the benefits of ACT within this context as well as the current evidence-base.

Objectives Include:
-Fundamentals on substance abuse and addiction, to include but not limited to behaviors, risk factors, incidence rates, and barriers faced by treating clinicians.
​-Use of ACT processes and skills for meeting clients where they are, and guiding intervention through the ACT core processes
​-General concepts and recommendations for structuring sessions and designing a personalized approach to ACT to substance abuse and addiction

This course meets criteria for 3 hours of general continuing education by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health for Oklahoma LPC and LMFT license holders, by the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers (provider #20250088) for Oklahoma LCSW license holders, by the Oklahoma Board of Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (certificate #20260018) for LADC and CADC license holders (3 hours addictions counseling specific CEs), and for Oklahoma case managers (3 hours general CEs). 3 Hours NBCC CEs.

Dr. David Pfaff, LPC

 Dr. Pfaff is a licensed counselor in Oklahoma and Texas, board approved clinical supervisor, and fulltime counselor educator. Clinically, Dr. Pfaff is in private practice with prior experience in community mental health, acute inpatient, drug court, MAT clinic, and university settings. Dr. Pfaff is also part of the fulltime faculty at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, having previously taught at Seton Hall University, Oklahoma City University, and University of Central Oklahoma. Being an approved LPC CEU provider within the State of Oklahoma, Dr. Pfaff trains working professionals on such topics as acceptance and commitment therapy, emotion focused therapies, attachment theory, and personality disorders. 

As an academic, Dr. Pfaff has authored on the topics of trauma and attachment, positive psychology and mindfulness-based interventions, acceptance and commitment therapy, emotion focused therapies, insight-oriented therapies, and the transtheoretical model. Dr. Pfaff is also an advocate for mental wellness and is featured in podcasts, article interviews, lecture spots, and discussion panels locally and nationally. Dr. Pfaff earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of the Cumberlands, MEd in Applied Behavioral Studies/Licensed Professional Counseling from Oklahoma City University, and BA in Anthropology from the University of Oklahoma.
