ODMHSAS Announces New Red Rock Facility in Elk City

Earlier this month, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services partnered with Red Rock Behavioral Health to launch a new mental health Urgent Recovery Center in Elk City, Oklahoma. The facility will serve as a 24-hour crisis center for the community. Read more on the Oklahoma Counseling Institute website.

 

Most Americans Unable to Receive Mental Healthcare

According to a nationwide study, two-thirds of Americans with mental health concerns were unable to secure treatment for their illness in 2021. This lack of care was even more prominent among those on Medicare, with only 15% of Medicare recipients with mental health diagnoses receiving treatment. Read more about the study on NPR.

 

Red Rock Opens Mental Healthcare Facility for Soldiers

Earlier this Fall, Red Rock Behavioral Health announced the opening of the newest Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic. The Oklahoma City facility is one of 25 opening across the country and aims to provide specialized mental healthcare for Oklahoma military personnel and their families. Learn more on PR Newswire.

 

Five Decades Have Passed Since Homosexuality was Removed from the DSM

Last week marked 50 years since homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The changed furthered the destigmatization of the 2SLGBTQIA+ population in the United States. Learn more on NPR.

 

Report Examines Instances of Oklahomans in Mental Health Crisis Perishing in Jail

According to a report by Oklahoma Watch, 28 detainees died in Oklahoma law enforcement custody from untreated mental health or substance abuse concerns in 2022. The investigation also uncovered inaccuracies in law enforcement agencies reporting deaths. Read more on Oklahoma Watch.
